What is the Greatest Cause of Teenage Deaths?

Posted on December 19th, 2014 by Admin

Teenage driver safety is a pressing concern for parents, and reasonably so.  More teenagers die as a result of car accidents than from any other cause.  By seeking Atlanta auto accident legal help, parents can help defray medical bill expenses and receive compensation for other damages.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides some shocking statistics about teenage drivers that puts the problem into proper perspective:

  • 2009 statistics show that eight teenagers (age range 16 to 19) died daily from motor vehicle accident injuries.
  • Teenage drivers have a four times greater likelihood of being in a collision than older drivers.
  • In 2009, approximately 3,000 teenagers died in auto accidents.
  • Approximately 350,000 teenagers received treatment in emergency rooms for car accident related injuries.
  • Persons most at risk for car accidents are 16- to 19-year-olds.
  • Male teenagers are two times more likely to be in a car crash than female teenagers.
  • Teenagers’ greatest risk for accidents are within their first year of driving.
  • Teenagers driving unsupervised with other teenagers as passengers increase their risks for car accidents.

The main reason that Georgia implemented its teenager graduated licensing program, called the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA) was to reduce teenage car accident injuries and fatalities.  The CDC reports that statistics show these types of graduated drivers licensing programs reduce fatalities and injuries from car accidents involving 16-year-olds by 38 and 40 percent, respectively.
